An asphalt driveway provides a smooth, safe, and durable surface that improves curb appeal. However, it will eventually need repaving due to vehicular and foot traffic. Despite this, you can extend its life span with regular asphalt maintenance. Protect this significant investment by following the tips below.

How to Maintain Your Asphalt Driveway

1. Invest in Sealcoating

Sealcoating the asphalt driveway is your first line of defense against the elements. This process adds a layer to the surface that keeps water and moisture out. It also fills hairline cracks and protects against harmful ultraviolet rays, which can cause the material to erode. You should apply the coating at least once every two to five years, but it depends on the traffic and heat the driveway endures.

2. Fix Drainage Problems

As part of your asphalt maintenance routine, ensure that water does not accumulate on the driveway. Pooling liquids can weaken the structure's integrity and break it down from underneath. As a result, it becomes more susceptible to developing potholes and cracks. If you notice puddles of water have accumulated after a rainy day, have the drainage system repaired immediately.

3. Inspect and Clean Regularly

Inspecting the driveway every six months will help you spot and remedy issues early. Look for signs of damage, such as cracks, and have them fixed by a paving contractor. This simple assessment can prevent you from needing large-scale repairs, saving you money.

Routinely sweep and remove debris and junk to maintain the surface's appearance, evaluating its condition as you perform the task. Additionally, trim the driveway's edges if any plants or weeds are present, as they can wreak havoc on the asphalt. You can opt to frame the entrance with bricks or stones for further protection.
